Biking Around Kathmandu Valley

Biking Around Kathmandu Valley

This is a 5-day biking trip on the ridge-top trails which encircle the Valley's rim. You travel along little-used dirt roads away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Only a short bike ride away lies a delightful world of wo oded slopes, small villages, hidden temples and the views which include all of the

principal peaks of the Nepal Himalaya - from Makalu to the Annapurnas providing some excellent, easy to semi - technical single track riding along old jeep roads. During these five days you will experience all of the sights, sounds, tastes and smells that make up life in Nepal’s 'Middle Hills'. You will visit the historic cities of Patan and Bhaktpur, hill resort of Nagarkot with its sunrise view of the entire Nepal Himalaya and the temples, monasteries and picturesque villages tucked away in the forests along the way. You are so close to the bustle of Kathmandu, but so far off the beaten tourist trail. With the mornings spent cycling above a sea of clouds, it would not be an exaggeration to call this a heaven for mountain bikers! Throughout the trip, support vehicles carrying all your gear will either follow behind you or be with you at the end of the day. Whether you ride for fun, or take it more seriously, challenges lie around every corner.

    01. KATHMANDU - KAKANI (31KM) Soon after breakfast we leave from our office in Thamel through the bustling back streets of Thamel and on to good wide undulating jeep tracks into jungle. Your efforts are rewarded by spectacular mountain views. We go to visit the Ranipauwa for good mountain views including Manasly (8163m) and visit the typical Tamang village and back Upwards for the seriously fit ride up to Kakani. We camp in a reserve at 2,000m to enjoy the stunning views of Ganesh Himal and Langtang, Lirung and the valley view of Likhu Khola 1,000m below.
    02. KAKANI TO NAGI GOMPA (31KM) Today we head off along one of the best single tracks in the valley down towards Budhanilkantha, a holy site for Hindus where Lord Vishnu is sleeping on the bed of snakes. Following the valley rim we then push our way on single-track uphill through thick forest of Shivapuri Reserve towards Nagi Gompa, a Buddhist nun's monastery. We camp close by the monastery premises spend enough time to absorbing the Tibetan culture here and observe the evening Puja.
    03. NAGI GOMPA TO NAGARKOT (34KM) This is a challenging day! We pedal through the dense jungle of Shivapuri National Park and the route to the Helambu trekking trail. We then ride down into the north-east corner of the valley, then we head on to a mix of single and jeep track to wind our way to Nagarkot. However, our route will depend on the condition of the trails. A short steep climb up to Nagarkot will be rewarded by the comfort and peaceful surrounding of the hotel where we spent our night. This is were part of the biking movie 'Retread' was filmed.
    04. NAGARKOT TO DHULIKHEL VIA NALA After an early morning breakfast we have two options to ride downhill. One is to ride downhill on paved road to Bhaktapur and then to Nala or two, ride uphill to Nagarkot viewing Tower and then follow a technically steep downhill to Nala and towards Dhulikhel. Overnight in hotel.
    05. DHULIKHEL TO KATHMANDU VIA LUBHU SISNERI We ride on jeep track to the ancient city of Panauti, where Lord Buddha once lived as a prince. This special village-truly lost in time-is rarely visited by tourists. Indreswor Mahadev Temple in Panauti is the oldest surviving temple in Nepal, believed to be constructed in 1294A.D. Climbing west, we follow a jeep track along the meandering Roshi river. Beyond the town of Madhuban, we enter into a narrow pristine valley ascending 300m on superb trail to reach the summit of Kathmandu Valley's eastern rim known as Lakhuri Bhanjyang. This is probably the oldest route east out of Kathmandu Valley, connecting the ancient cities of the valley with Panauti. What a grunt! But the views of the Himalayas are more than compensate. From the saddle, the descent is on switch-backed jeep track. After an hour and a 500m descent, we come to Sisneri, a quiet valley village. The ethnicity of the people change as we descend from Tamangs, Thakuries and Chhetris to lowland Newari farmers. We then cycle the last part of our journey from Sisneri to Kathmandu city making a quick round-about through Patan Durbar Square.
